Eating

For the first few days after you receive your braces, you will probably experience minor discomfort as your teeth, lips, and other soft tissues adjust to the brackets. During this time, stick to soft foods. You will be able to chew normally again shortly, but you will need to be careful throughout your entire treatment to ensure that your braces do not break and that food or other debris does not lodge between the wires.

We recommend that you get in the habit of cutting your food into tiny pieces. We also advise that you avoid hard and sticky foods, as they can cause your braces to break or pull off.

Some examples of hard foods include:

  • Corn nuts
  • Ice
  • Hard breads
  • Hard pretzels
  • Uncut apples
  • Uncut carrots
  • Uncut celery
  • Frozen candy bars
  • Nuts
  • Hard candies
  • Beef jerky
  • Crunchy chips
  • Hard tacos

Some examples of sticky foods include:

  • Caramels
  • Starburst
  • Sugar Daddies
  • Taffy
  • Gummy bears
  • Sticky candies
  • Meat on the bone
  • Beef jerky
  • Granola bars
  • Corn on the cob
  • Bubble gum
  • Tootsie Rolls

Brushing

While wearing braces, it is important to maintain good oral hygiene. Brushing and flossing regularly help prevent food and bacteria from become trapped between your brackets and wires to cause tooth decay and enamel stains. When you visit our orthodontist, we can teach you how to properly brush with braces to maintain a clean, healthy smile.

Regular Dental Checkups

Regular dental checkups are more important than ever while wearing braces. Because your teeth gather more food and bacteria during your orthodontic treatment, regular dental cleanings and exams are needed to prevent decay, disease, and spotting and keep your smile in good health.
